Edibles That Sound Like MMA Moves

What's On Tapout?

Published: Apr 16, 2008

1 Rudy's Kung Fu Grip
Nodding Head Brewpub, 1516 Sansom St., 215-569-9525

One of Nodding Head's cornerstone brews, the seasonally available Kung Fu Grip has a lot in common with a Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist — just when you think everything's going fine, it comes up behind you and lays you out on your ass. Its fruity, friendly aromatics are inviting, but don't take Rudy for a chump — at 11 percent ABV, overindulging can lead to a swift TKO.

2 Monkey Bar
Flying Monkey Patisserie, Reading Terminal Market, 12th and Arch streets, 215-928-0340

Eating Rebecca Michaels' signature treat is way safer than sampling a bar of the arm variety. After submitting to brown sugar-laden layers of bananas, pecans, chocolate and coconut, your stomach (and ulna and radius bones) will thank you.

3 SkullSplitter
Eulogy Belgian Tavern, 136 Chestnut St., 215-413-1918

Scotland's Orkney Brewery is famous for this beer, named to honor a notoriously violent 10th-century Viking earl. Sweet malt and caramel notes characterize this textbook example of a "wee heavy," or Scotch ale. Sip it from a proper stemmed glass and it's like a tasty knee to the cranium.

4 Spartan Roll
Umai Umai, 533 N. 22nd St., 215-988-0707

This is madness! This! Is! SUSHI! This specialty roll combines miso-marinated beef tenderloin, crunchy shrimp tempura, chives and a perky paprika aioli — protein-rich maki that'll bring out your inner pugilist. Flattering codpiece not included.

5 Antioxidant Punch
Naked Chocolate Café, 1317 Walnut St., 215-735-7310

Like a snappy jab, Naked's beverage is a wake-up call — only difference is, unlike getting pummeled, it's actually good for you. The mixture features dark chocolate, berries, coconut water and acai. Sip it slow — don't want you to (rear naked) choke.
