The Arden folks take a very adult approach to children's theater. This isn't oxymoronic — and it's really smart! Terry Nolen, Arden's producing artistic director, believes wholeheartedly in family entertainment. More than that, he puts his company's best resources behind it, including first-rate directors (Matt Pfeiffer this time), actors (the ensemble includes Chris Faith, Doug Hara, Julianna Zinkel and other Philly notables) and designers. And you can be sure the material is interesting, too.
Up now is an adaptation of Go, Dog. Go!, that greatly beloved classic by P.D. Eastman, and a perfect choice on several levels. It's a rollicking canine adventure that should translate ideally into musical vaudeville entertainment. The story, which remains a favorite, is going on 50 years old and will probably be a known commodity to parents and even a few young grandparents. And what fun to see Eastman's colorful world taken to the stage! In keeping with Nolen's belief in the mission of children's theater, Arden keeps the prices reasonable, too, and sensibly tiered for different ages.
More than just an early summer treat for the family, Go, Dog. Go! is likely to be one of the hits of the Philly theater season.
Through June 1, $14-$30, Arden Theatre, 40 N. Second St., 215-922-1122, ardentheatre.org.
