Take It All Back

Published: Apr 16, 2008

Sat., April 19, 10:30 a.m. registration, 11:15 a.m. walk begins, 30th Street Station, 3001 Market St.; noon-4 p.m. speakers and entertainment, Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St., free, 215-985-3315, woar.org

According to the U.S. Department of Justice's 2006 National Crime Victimization Survey, someone is sexually assaulted every two minutes in this country. It's a staggering statistic, one that Women Organized Against Rape (WOAR) has been working to eliminate for 35 years. In recognition of April as National Sexual Assault Awareness month, the local nonprofit is hosting Take It All Back, a community walk and day of education to end sexual violence.

Following in the tradition of early '70s marches to protest sexual violence, Take it All Back will begin with a walk from 30th Street Station to the Rotunda. The afternoon will feature speakers including Philadelphia Police Special Victims Unit Captain Sonya Velasquez and Deborah Harley of the District Attorney's Family Violence Sexual Assault Unit. Proceeds from T-shirts, walker pledges and raffles (for Phillies tickets and restaurant gift certificates) will benefit future WOAR initiatives.

In addition to raising awareness, Take It All Back seeks to promote hope and healing. The day will also feature singers Retta Morgan and Monica McIntyre, children's activities and a survivor art display.
