In April 2007, many of the dancers and musicians in residence at the Mascher Space Cooperative began making monthly treks a few blocks south to NEXUS Gallery, performing new works inspired by the gallery's current exhibitions. The brainchild of Perpetual Mvmt>Snd co-directors Emily Sweeney and Bilwa, who regularly explore the crossroads of different forms of expression, paraphrase/NEXUS has spawned a wide variety of three-dimensional responses to the works hanging on the walls.
To celebrate its first anniversary, paraphrase/NEXUS will simply go about business as (un)usual, premiering three new pieces inspired by the photography of Susan Abram and Tasha Doremus. Both photographers create images which attempt not only to capture reality, but to respond to chance and manipulation. Abrams' work is altered by the inconsistencies of her own handmade paper, while Doremus incorporates the unpredictability of plastic and vintage cameras, then further degrades the images with scratches and tears.
In response to their work, Miro Dance Theatre members Jil Stifel and Paul Struck will perform a duet, while choreographer Zornitsa Styoyanova will offer a new solo work. In addition, composer/sound artist Mikronesia will premiere "Daemon En Gauze," a string trio performed by Normal Love violinist Carlos Santiago, violist Martha Savery of Gemini Wolf, and Rachel's cellist, Eve Miller. Having worked extensively in electronic music, Mikronesia employs acoustic instruments to emulate the textures of electronics in the piece, inspired by the work of Gyorgy Ligeti.
