DANCE/IMPROV MUSIC

Butoh dance and improvised music share a kinship in not only their inclination toward limitless experimentation, but also their status on the fringes of culture. The two meet as 30-year butoh vet Katsura Kan performs with Philly improv guru Jack Wright, sure to match each other's precise, severe gestures. The Japan/U.S. exchange is reversed with the duo of NY dancer Kristin Narowich and Tokyo-born (but Philly-based) percussionist Toshi Makihara, whose background in dance makes his work on the snare drum almost as theatrical and athletic. Kan will also present a workshop earlier in the day on communication with tradition.
