Immediately after getting the go-ahead from Space 1026, "Fuzz" curators Patrick Costello and Andy Jenkins began making plans for the show's centerpiece. Recalls Costello, "As soon as we decided to do this we said, 'There needs to be a pillow fort, and it needs to be as big as possible.'" Composed of 100 hand-sewn, screen-printed cushions, the fort used up 200 yards of quilt padding and 200 yards of cloth. The felt tendril lining (pictured) of its 12-foot tunnel entrance is the result of more than 50 friends chopping away since January. In short, they followed through.
"We set out to make something comforting and beautiful," says Costello. "We liked the idea of like-minded individuals getting together to make something happen." In addition to one proper pillow fort, "Fuzz" consists of fabric pieces and soft sculptural work by mostly central Virginia-based artists and friends. Both Costello's and Jenkin's mothers have pitched in, and Kristin Smith of Williamsburg, Va., has contributed papier-måché piñatas.
In the spirit of friendship and comfort, "Fuzz" also consists of a monthlong series of workshops and events. The opening reception will feature cupcakes and music by folk band the Great White Jenkins. Other happenings include a screen-printing party, kite-flying celebration and puppet show. On schedule for May 31, the last day of "Fuzz"? "Hug your friends."
Opening reception Fri., May 2, 6-10 p.m., free, runs through May 31, Space 1026, 1026 Arch St., second floor, 215-574-7630, space1026.com.
