Dinner service at Marshall Green and Kristin Mulvenna's so-cute-all-the-time café kicked off last Thursday, May 22. (They've been doing breakfast, lunch and brunch up till now.) We checked it out, and holy mung beans, you need to go. Dishes we tried — smoked sea scallops served with mustard oil, a pomegranate gastrique and a green lentil/frisée/pomegranate salad (pictured); a just-right-for-spring whole-wheat crepe stuffed with fiddlehead ferns, ramps, fava beans and rich St. Andre cheese; and Olympia oysters on the half shell with a homemade mignonette sauce. They're offering dinner Wednesday through Saturday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Go, go, go.
Sassafras, the revered Old City bar that fizzled out late last year, reopened May 16 under the watchful Irish eyes of new owners Donal McCoy and Neill Laughlin. Mostly cosmetic edits for the interior, including the addition of gigantic bistro mirrors and imported English wallpaper for the 50-seat ground floor; the original tin ceiling and Victorian tile remain intact. ("People are coming in who came in 25 years ago and saying, 'Wow, this is the same place,'" says McCoy.) They're offering six beers on tap, a large selection of whiskeys, scotches and ryes and a boutique wine list. Chef Mike Winiesky of McCoy's Serrano/Tin Angel consulted on food, which includes updated versions of dishes from the original Sassafras menu. A second-floor lounge should be ready for the fall. Bite This: Revamped items from the OG Sassafras include the "sassy steak" sandwich (with creamy brie and grilled onions on a torpedo roll), verenike (Mongolian dumplings) and the famous grilled lamb burger.
