Schuylkill Banks
Every Thu., June 19-Aug. 28

If you're up for a little summer service by the water, the Schuylkill River Development Corporation (SRDC) needs help attracting and entertaining crowds. Volunteers can soak up some comedy at Laughter on the Banks, a Thursday night movie series featuring flicks such as Office Space and Annie Hall. You should expect to commit three to four hours setting up, cleaning up, manning the snack table and distributing SRDC info to moviegoers. Call 215-222-6030, ext. 106 or e-mail josh.nims@srdc.net.

QUASH, the Quest to Unravel Alzheimer's Scavenger Hunt, needs volunteers to work registration tables and checkpoints, provide hunters with refreshments and keep players' spirits high. QUASHers themselves raise $200 each for Alzheimer's research in order to participate in the citywide game, and there's no minimum age to pitch in, whether you're looking to hunt or help. Visit quashnow.org or e-mail phillyinfo@quashnow.org.

Easter Seals Walk with Me
Sat., June 14, 6 a.m.-noon

Dedicated to helping kids with autism, cerebral palsy and other disabilities, Easter Seals of Southeastern Pennsylvania hosts this annual walk to raise both funds and awareness. Volunteer help is crucial in distributing brochures and recruiting teams, setting up and cleaning up. Those interested can pitch in for a six-hour stint, which begins at the Art Museum. Call 610-565-2353 or visit walkwithme.org/philadelphia.

Jobs With Justice
Ongoing

In a twofold mission, Jobs With Justice (JWJ) secures benefits for employees through Philadelphia Offices and Workers Rising and speaks out against sweatshop labor with the Pennsylvania Sweat-Free Campaign. Active in 40 cities in 25 states across the country, JWJ's myriad of volunteer opportunities play to individual strengths, whether they be artistic or administrative. According to events coordinator Dorian Lam, "JWJ is interested in empowering people to do this work; we're looking to build them into community leaders." Call 215-205-8750 or e-mail volunteer@jwj.org.

Independence Dragon Boat Regatta
Sat., June 7, 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Chinese legend has it that in 278 B.C., local fishermen raced to save poet Qu Yuan from drowning himself in the Milou River. As a reenactment of their haste, dragon boat racing was born. Volunteers can aid the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association in pulling off its second annual festival on the Schuylkill, the Independence Dragon Boat Regatta, which expects to draw some 2,000 spectators and athletes to the water. Help is needed manning water platforms, holding the boats as races start, watching the gates and running refreshment stands. Proceeds from the regatta benefit Vietnam Veterans of America. Visit independencedragonboat.com or e-mail support@phillydragonboat.com.
