"It's not like the mall is ever going to have a Starving Artist Bargain Blowout," says Todd Marrone, Ghosticorn Apparel artist and participator in the ninth annual Art for the Cash Poor, an event that allows art lovers to score original prints, paintings, jewelry, photographs, books and clothing on the cheap — nothing will be priced over $199.
The sale, which runs all weekend, is organized by Philly arts nonprofit InLiquid and includes food and drinks from Philadelphia Brewing Co. and La Dominique Creperie, among others; raffles from Philly favorites like Art Star, London Grill and InterAct Theatre Co.; and live DJs and music, including the West Philadelphia Orchestra. Joan Smith, InLiquid associate director, says it's an ideal setting for someone who has yet to purchase an original piece.
"When you buy, you're not only supporting the Philadelphia art community, you're creating your own collection," she says. Marrone, whose myth-inspired tees can be found in Philly shops such as Jinxed Clothing, will be participating for the second year.
"It's so special to be able to find all this great, custom work for a really affordable price, as opposed to those mass-produced canvasses from Bed, Bath & Beyond," he says. "There's really nothing else like this for artists and art enthusiasts."
