What the lords of Dogtown were to Santa Monica, the Bones Brigade was to San Francisco. Tommy Guerrero was a Bones who made good beyond the halfpipe in his skate punk bands Free Beer and Jet Black Crayon, both of which he wrote songs for and played guitar and bass. But it was Guerrero's eventual solo albums — Return of the Bastard, Soul Food Taqueria, From the Soil to the Soul — that truly stood out, all flush with Chet Baker-inspired Cali jazz, organ-fueled Latino funk and jittery hip-hop with laid-back grooves. Still, he never forgot where he earned his bones. So Guerrero formed Blktop Project with California skaters Ray Barbee and Matt Rodriguez, brought a Philly skate punk named Chuck Treece along for the ride, and made one EP (2007's Blktop Project) and one new CD (Lane Change) that sound like all sides of Guerrero: the Spanglish soul, the hippity-hop, the cool jazz and the hardcore skate punk. Smooth.
