E Ness

When Diddy co-signs your music, you can sit back, relax and wait for the custom poloshirts to arrive, right? Not so much the case with E Ness. The Philly native and star of MTV's Making the Band is keeping his nose to the grind in the mixtape game and not letting the network fame cloud his focus. See the future of hip-hop this Saturday — in Lansdale

Sat., Aug. 2, 10 p.m., $15, with King Magnetic, Adlib and DJ No Phrillz, Third & Walnut Bar and Club, 43 W. Third St., Lansdale, michael.trampe@cherimedia.com.

Apples in Stereo

Elder statesmen of the Elephant 6 collective, Apples in Stereo are still plowing a perky psych-pop furrow while many of their contemporaries are tilling fallow soil. After 16 years and eight albums, Robert Schneider's band of Beach Boys-loving brethren continue to reap rewards — whether it's via their fuzz-fueled live shows, celebrity support (Stephen Colbert and Elijah Wood) or commercial endorsements. On tour to support their current album, a collection of B-sides and rarities titled Electronic Projects for Musicians, the Apples are still ripe after all these years.

Sat., Aug. 2, 7.30 p.m., $19-$24, with Poison Control Center and Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears, World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 215-222-1400, worldcafelive.com.

No Merch for Oil

Pooling their resources, indie hip-hop bands Educated Consumers (pictured), Dezmatic and MindsOne arranged their own East Coast mini tour and gave it one of the dopest names I've heard in a minute. At Wednesday's No Merch for Oil tourstop, expect a combination of silliness and artists who take their music seriously, not so much themselves. Local Jimmy Greek will be joining them, as well — where you been, man?

Wed., Aug. 6, 8 p.m., $8, the Khyber, 56 S. Second St., 215-238-5888, myspace.com/nomerchforoil.

DJ Obi 1

You could say 2006 was Obi 1's year: That's when he won the King of Philly and DMC DJ Virginia Beach competitions, and placed sixth in the nation at the Guitar Center USA finals. While the label DJ definitely applies, the proper name for Obi 1 is turntablist. The Konkrete Jungle Philly chapter is hosting him and all his tricks at the Barbary tonight. Oh wait, that didn't sound right.

Thu., July 31, 10 p.m., $6, with Miss Behave, Ghost and Malevil, the Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., 215-634-7400.

Extra Golden

Extra Golden mixes African music with American rock, but don't sound like Vampire Weekend. Where those preppy New Yorkers took inspiration from their parents' Peter Gabriel albums, Extra Golden's Ian Eagleson and Alex Minoff went straight to the source. While in Kenya researching Benga music, the pair met local musicians Otieno Jagwasi and Onyango Wuod Omari and recorded a debut album in just three hours. The unfortunate death of Jagwasi didn't impair the band, which released a second album, Hera Ma Nono, recorded in the Pocono Mountains, adding a local layer to this international group.

Sat., Aug. 2, 8 p.m., $10 with Sonic Liberation Front and Public Record, Johnny Brenda's, 1201 Frankford Ave., 866-468-7619, johnnybrendas.com.
