The clear hit of the summer in the Goren household is the song "Titus Andronicus" by the New Jersey band of the same name on its The Airing of Grievances CD. Ruby, the 4-year-old music director of the family, has demanded that this song be played with the "a lot" button (repeat) engaged on the car stereo on the way to and from pretty much everywhere for the last few months. The song and the record manage to transmit a flawlessly raucous mood, similar to that of Rum, Sodomy & the Lash by the Pogues, and to reconcile and to communicate utter contempt with life/people while simultaneously loving and celebrating it/them through anthems. It may strike you as almost, but not quite, appropriate for little Ruby to scream along at the top of her tiny lungs with a chorus of: "Your life is over!" Fortunately, she has interpreted this refrain merely as nonsensical but harmless "Rockin'zola!" Ruby chants "Rockin'zola!" end on end at summer camp so counselors and other parents may think Ruby is lots of things (smart, boffo, rich, good looking, muscular, etc.), but probably not nihilistic with crappy parents.
