Anti-folk's got a reputation for being all gentle boy-girl vocals and ditties about bikes and cartoons, but Schwervon!'s nothing like that. Sure, there's some cutesy stuff. Nan Turner and Matt Roth are a couple, after all, so it's only natural they should sing about making each other dinner. But half the time, it's hard to hear anything, let alone sweet nothings, over all the garage-rock racket she thwacks the drums, he shreds the guitar. And besides, on 2006's I Dream of Teeth, they don't coo so often as yell at each other, seemingly working through the ups and downs of a relationship. She lashes out at him in "Groundhogs," culminating in a therapeutic-sounding shouting match; he pines for her return in the keyboard-driven "Sore Eyes," hoping to "set aside a side of love" for her by album's end. Aw. We're assuming this is all fictional, of course, so don't feel bad dancing up a storm to their very catchy woes.
