Purchase sampling tickets and observe grilling greats in action at this summer fundraiser. Both restaurants (London Grill, Paddy's Well) and individual "pit masters" are competing in four different cooking competitions, including an all-out rib-off against former Phils centerfielder Maddox himself (pictured, left). The winner of that challenge will receive tickets to the World Series. Proceeds go toward Maddox's Youth Golf and Academics Program. Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way, 856-756-0222, phillies.com.
Epicurious.com, the online recipe resource hearted by foodies worldwide, is being represented by Editor in Chief Tanya Steel and other higher-ups for a week at the Reading Terminal. Reps will distribute tote bags and recipes tailored to Philly's seasonal produce, from grilled spicy citrus chicken thighs with corn and green onions to watermelon and cantaloupe with lime-mint syrup. Reading Terminal Market, 12th and Arch streets, 215-922-2317, readingterminalmarket.org.
Local chef Christina Dimacali will lead tasters through a selection of whites paired with light, fresh foods. A 2004 French Riesling will complement a chilled cucumber melon soup, and Filipino-style shrimp fritters will be served alongside an Argentine Torrontes. For dessert, expect goat cheese cheesecake and a soft glass of Prosecco. The Wine School at Foster's Homeware, 399 Market St., 800-817-7351, vinology.com.
Philly's known for its bike-friendly attitude as well as its outstanding breweries and bars. Rarely (and perhaps fortunately) are the two combined. That oversight will be remedied by Beer of the Bike's group ride to three city brewpubs: Triumph, Nodding Head and Dock Street. Unlike past rides, a barbecue will await those devoted enough to swerve in the name of good beer. Trophy Bike Garage, Liberties Walk, 1040 N. American St., 215-592-1234, beerofthebike.wordpress.com.
The Sidecar will profile some of Sly Fox's small-batch brews (like their Abbey Dubbel and Schwarzbier) and entertain patrons with '80s-themed tunes and eats. The kitchen'll serve treats like sloppy joes and Tater Tots, and owner Adam Ritter will spin some vinyl from his scary-huge record collection. Sidecar Bar & Grille, 2201 Christian St., 215-732-3429, thesidecarbar.com.
