Fall Circus Arts Classes
|
Beginning Sept. 2, $120-$160 per course, Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, 5900 Greene St., 215-849-1991, phillycircus.com
With the Olympics in full swing and our darling American gymnasts coming out victorious, we're convinced we've missed our calling. But instead of tumbling around the office (cubicle wall, or potential balance beam?), may we suggest taking some real acrobatic classes at the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts. Beginning Sept. 2, their fall course schedule offers plenty of opportunities to channel Shawn's perky little smile and Nastia's smoldering stare (meow!).
Director Shana Kennedy suggests "Beginner Aerials" for newbies, a class that incorporates the fundamentals of trapeze and rope climbing. If you're feeling more adventurous (say, you've already booked your flight to London in 2012), try "Handstands and Backbends" or get on the tight wire at "Equilibristics." All classes integrate strength building, flexibility work, balancing techniques and a Madonna-worthy upper body workout. And, with sessions maxing out at six students, you can pretend your instructor is the pushy former Olympian parent you never had.
Aspiring gymnasts of all ages are welcome, and there's even a special batch of kids classes for the "16-year-olds."
