Beth Brandon must have spent ages on her ink and pencil drawings. Forests of itty-bitty pine trees give way to clusters of teeny-weeny tree stumps and burning logs, each one satisfyingly detailed down to its miniscule knobs. In one very impressive grid of ever-so-slightly-different stumps, Brandon's caption confirms our suspicions: "I wish I had a typewriter that did this."
J.L. Schnabel paints portraits of the world's most visually striking females, "femme fatales" who historically or mythologically ruled over men in some way or another. Succubus is all flowing black hair and bare breasts, but has a demonic skull for a face. Joan of Arc's giant, haunting eyes are surrounded by a golden halo and brilliant blue and silver rays (pictured). On the wall next to them, Schnabel records their stories and dramatic downfalls (Cleopatra: suicide by asp bite; Mata Hari: death by firing squad).
Marisa Olson makes background images the center of attention. Animated GIFs of disco balls, trolls and nail polish bottles bounce around in her Unlocking the Sandbox video, while the screensaverlike wallpaper installation Amateur Astronomy looks pitch black from afar but full of twinkling stars up close. Our favorite is a series of Iris prints representing sound files in fluorescent colors and fun shapes.
