Mike Brenner is Philadelphia's signature steel guitar player, having made the steel bitch sing in stints in the Low Road and Marah, not to mention acts of international renown like Badly Drawn Boy and Magnolia Electric. As Slo-Mo — his hyper hip-hop act that, since 2005, has found him paired with MC Mic Wrecka — Brenner has plumbed the steel guitar's funkiest depths. Amen. But this week, he's invited other players to show how devout they are to the religion of the steel guitar. And though Susan Alcorn toys with Gamelan and Indian classical music and Jim Cohen jukes with swinging jazz and country as part of the mix, few are higher and holier in the church of the steel guitar than the Campbell Brothers. Their gospel program, Sacred Steel, is culled from the House of God Keith Dominion Church. Their tradition has become a mission and their music is potently electric in its sound as well as its vibration. Can I get another amen?
