Choice Awards '08

Just Desserts

Published: Sep 24, 2008

When Zoë Lukas showed up to the City Paper offices with two boxes of cupcakes, we knew this year's Choice Awards were going to be sweet. One hour and two dozen bad decisions later, we were feeling even better, if not a little guilty.

You see, Zoë does a lot more than bake a chocolate-banana cupcake to jump across a conference table for. The lovely lady behind Whipped Bakeshop also holds a degree in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art, which makes things like a pan of Michael Nutter face cookies possible. (It's Mayor Nutter Butter from here on out.) And while we can already see our three-tiered Philly cover cake at the center of every spring wedding, we suggest finding an excuse to serve up her Chase Utley creations. He's just as cute (and tasty?) in icing as he is in real life.

But back to those Choice Awards, our annual (and very unscientific) survey of all that is delicious, delectable and half-baked in Philly.

This city has plenty of hot cakes. Of course, it wouldn't be home without some tough cookies. But no worries — we're giving them all awards. The sweeties and the semi-sweet; the sugar mommas and the spice girls.

Now, excuse us, but there seems to be some extra frosting on that bottom tier.

It's too bad they couldn't print the paper with frosting this week. I have had at least a dozen different flavors of cupcakes from Whipped Bakeshop, and every time I am amazed with the creativity and innovation. It is a combination of baking and art. Great work Zoe!
