The Chupacabra Responds

I actually enjoyed your op-ed [Slant, "Drawn to Blood," Isaiah Thompson, Oct. 2, 2008], in which I make a star turn as the, what was it? A chupacabra. (I speak Spanish fluently, but never came across that one.) It was extremely well-written, and I applaud your use of metaphor. (Or is that simile?) [Editor's note: It's a simile.] I would point out that the quotes I featured in my article stand on their own, including the ones you omitted, namely, the usual moaning about how lack of job opportunities leads to "hostility" which is a lovely euphemism for cop-killing. And yes, I do get those North Philly neighborhoods confused; I left Logan at the age of 8 and the geography of memory is not one of my strong suits. But I'm not that good with my Havertown environs, either.

So thanks, Isaiah, for a very enjoyable foray into fiction. And my mother thanks you for acknowledging that her daughter does seem to possess human DNA.

Celebrity Death Match

Damon [Feldman] is a great guy and showed me my true potential [Naked City, "The Ringleader," A.D. Amorosi, Oct. 2, 2008]. I started boxing for him out of trust in November of '07. I am currently one of the biggest supporters of celebrity boxing and have accumulated a record of 5-0. I look forward to every possible match there is in this area because Damon makes it possible to fight in an event and at the same time have your name heard. And he makes the little people, who think that they do not mean anything, feel like superstars in life. I am a full supporter of his vision. ... Damon is on the right track to superstardom, and I will make sure ... that I am on the boat with him.

Damon is bad for boxing! Celebrity boxing is so far from real boxing it makes the people that are for real in the sport sick! He is a fraud. He has people that were bums and also frauds in the sport supporting him and training people to fight in his fixed shows. It's a slap in the face to all the real boxers out there. It should be banned before some of his participants, that have even been drunk before they fight, possibly get hurt. Please don't support this fraud of a promoter! He is bad for the great sport of boxing!

When the Cat's Away ...

I'm glad to hear that the beat cops have made a difference in West Philly [News, "Hoofin' It," Isaiah Thompson, Sept. 25, 2008]. Murders are down, robberies are down. That's a good thing. Nationally, I guess all they show are people getting beat with hammers on the subway and police getting shot to death. The city is so much more than that. I know that looks horrible when you see it, but it's only a handful of repeat offenders that shouldn't be out on the streets. These judges should be voted out next election. It's a sick game of cat 'n' mouse where criminals get locked up over and over again, until they finally get into shootouts with police. It's very sad and it's something that doesn't have to be. The gun laws need to be stiffened, but in Pennsylvania it's already been proven time and time again that the state doesn't care about what happens here in Philly. They don't care if we all kill each other on the streets. Funny when Philly (and its surrounding suburbs) brings in most of the state's revenue. You'd think that Harrisburg would be trying to protect its interests, but ...

Anyway, I hope Ramsey and Nutter keep up the good work despite having no help from Harrisburg.
