Nice work on "The Fishtown Effect" [Cover Story, Isaiah Thompson, Oct. 30, 2008]. Isaiah's conclusion that "maybe this is what racial healing looks like — gradual and tortured" is touching and profound. People with inherited prejudices are having to decide about this man based on his merits. Maybe those prejudices begin to recede with conscious deliberation and action.

Maybe this election there'll be a "reverse-Bradley." White people who say they are voting for McCain may go into the booth and vote for Obama, but don't want to admit it (because they'll be cut out of their rich, corrupt, Republican grandfather's will?).

Fishtown has always gotten a bad rap. Yes, we have a lot of racism but look what surrounds us. My father raised me to like a person, not a skin color. Fishtown is just like every inner-city whitehood: NYC, Boston, etc. Go to Southie. It makes Fishtown look like the headquarters for the NAACP.

Good, bad or indifferent, we have two, and only two, viable candidates for president this election. Vote for the one who you think will come closest to furthering your personal agenda and stop attacking those who don't agree with you — it's damaging to both you and our country.
As for the race issue, everyone is a racist. We're tribal creatures by nature and sort people into two groups: "those like us" (or our tribe) and "others." Some people are voting for Obama because he's "black," while others are voting against him for the same reason. Both groups are voting for the wrong reasons. We're supposed to be sapient creatures — let's act like it for a change.

Why would you have a hard time getting your head around the fact that Barack Obama is winning [Cover Story, "How This Feels," Doron Taussig, Oct. 30, 2008]? It could not be a more ripe opportunity for a Democrat to win the election. A Democrat-trained seal would have a shot at winning. This country is licking its wounds after a bitter post-9/11 battle. Members of this country as well as the rest of the world want to kick the U.S. while it is down. Jump on the bandwagon ... why not? Do you actually think that the situation is going to magically change if Barack wins? Dream on.

Let's not be cynical. It may seem to keep us "safe," i.e. not disappointed, but at the huge expense of closing us down. Instead, be more like the Phillies fans who, as the players sincerely noted, truly helped the world championship arrive here. Keep the faith — it may be risky the opposite risk is way worse.

Shouldn't there be an editor's note at the end [Cover Story, "My Concession Speech," John McCain, Oct. 30, 2008]? Some Americans really are not smart enough to recognize satire, sarcasm and humor when they see it. It seems a bit unethical to present this as John McCain's words with his byline — unless there is also a writer on staff named John McCain, of course.

The fleeting joy experienced by the drunken revelers who shoved, heaved and, finally, flipped Ted Passon's car upside down PALES in comparision to the deep remorse they must have felt while reading about "the poor kid who got his car flipped" in last week's citypaper...or on Action news...or Philebrity....or the mass emails.....or Myspace...or Facebook....or two pages later in the citypaper's coverage of the First Person Arts Festival where a less creative writer might have used the space assigned to describe the Philadelphia Storytelling Grandslam to actually decribe what the event will consist of. From what I gather in your blurb the whole night is all about him. And rightfully so- any guy who parks his car in the middle of Broad street on the last night of the world series sounds like a man with something to say! Maybe he'll use his five minutes of stage time to solicit us for money for another gas guzzler... Good thing you didn't mention what other performers will be at the show or any other people who got their cars flipped- that's what they get for not being a little PR savvy.
Anyway, thanks, I love reading the citypaper so I can stay abreast with who your writers are friends with!
Love,
