You could refer to Nate Wooley and Peter Evans as trumpet extremists. No matter how they wield their horns, both tend toward the boundary-straining end of the spectrum. Wooley (pictured) was last in town as part of Anthony Braxton's costumed "Composition No. 103" at St. Mark's Church, blowing a particularly intense solo in cape and Zorro mask, then nailing the demanding rhythmic figures of "Composition No. 169." Evans recently stopped by with guitarist Mary Halvorson and Weasel Walter in a trio that revealed new facets in the playing of all three. Both are prolific and adventurous improvisers who reach into the outer regions of their instrument's range and return with sounds that may not seem quite natural but are always musical. That makes their teaming the inevitable highlight of this evening of Bowerbird-presented duos, which also imports Swiss bassist Christian Weber for a mix'n'match showcase of virtuosic experimentation, with each other and with locals Daniel Blacksberg (trombone) and Jon Barrios (bass).
Thu., Nov. 13, 8 p.m., $8-10, Physick House Museum, 321 S. Fourth St., bowerbird.org.
