Like the Canary Islands where he grew up, El Guincho is not easy to pigeonhole. Located off the west coast of Africa, the Spanish-owned archipelago is closer to the bazaars of Morocco than it is to Barcelona (which the solo artist now calls home). Similarly, El Guincho's multilayered sound combines tribal rhythms with tropical melodies. And while he's been called a European counterpart to Panda Bear — both artists utilize hazy samples atop repetitive beats — El Guincho eschews the Animal Collective member's celestial style for a more upbeat, dancefloor approach. Listen to the doo-wop-infused Tropicalia of "Palmitos Park" (which sounds like Os Mutantes covering the Flamingoes) to the pulsating Caribbean steel drums that propel "Kalise." On this tour his usual one-man sampler and floor tom set-up is bolstered by a synthesizer and an additional band member, which should allow El Guincho to remix himself live.
