It's always worth a look when Kenny Werner assembles a new trio. Chances are, if they meet his exacting standards, they'll absolutely cook. And if they're playing at that level, then they'll be too busy to stick together for long. The whimsically virtuosic Werner is one of the most undersung players in jazz, most of his trio mates having rocketed past him on the stardom scale. His first trio included drummer Tom Rainey, one of the most innovative on the scene; he then worked with Billy Hart, himself a below-the-radar legend, and Drew Gress, who now has the most packed calendar of anyone in the biz. His last trio, with drummer Ari Hoenig and bassist Johannes Weidenmuller, recently disbanded as Hoenig concentrates more on leading his own groups. Werner's latest project includes bassist Scott Colley, a frequent collaborator with saxophonist Chris Potter, and Antonio Sanchez, drummer for Pat Metheny's Group and latest trio. Catch 'em while you can.
