Q-Tip

A Tribe Called Quest fans, exhale just a little bit. While the possibility of the three members reuniting on record seems dim, breakout MC Q-Tip is filling that void with lyrics and beats reminiscent of the classic ATCQ formula. His new CD, The Renaissance (Motown), is surprisingly filled with so much substance, you almost forget it is not a Tribe album. Almost.

Wed., Dec. 3, 8 p.m., $26-$28, with Cool Kids, The Knux and Pacific Division, Trocadero, 215-922-5483, thetroc.com.

ROCK/POP
King Khan and BBQ Show

The wild and chaotic stage show, it seems, is as important to King Khan and BBQ as the music. Luckily, their songs are up to the challenge. Veering from raucous garage rock to tender ballads, this stripped-down duo careens through its retro take on rock 'n' roll as if drag racing a musical hot rod. And while they might have a penchant for off-kilter spectacles, this doesn't diminish the rocking out.

Fri., Nov. 28, 9:30 p.m., $10, with Vivian Girls, Jacuzzi Boys and Love City, Johnny Brenda's, 1201 Frankford Ave., 866-468-7619, johnnybrendas.com.

ROCK/POP
Sebastien Grainger

In the musical custody battle following the demise of Canadian dance-punk duo Death from Above 1979, Sebastien Grainger was granted exclusive visiting rights to the rockier side of their sound. On his first solo effort since the split, Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains (Saddle Creek), he channels his punk energy through an arena rock/new wave filter, straddling the anthemic middle ground between the Killers and Queens of the Stone Age.

Mon., Dec. 1, 9 p.m., $10, with Josh Reichmann and Rad Racket, Johnny Brenda's, 1201 Frankford Ave., 215-739-9684, johnnybrendas.com.

HIP-HOP
Immortal Technique

Immortal Technique's politically charged rhyming might be a bit too revolutionary for some ears. For others, that's what makes him a stand-out and respected rapper. He sharpened his skills as a battle performer in New York before becoming an underground spokesman for social consciousness. Expect to hear a chunk of his political views on stage, as well as some tricky wordplay.

Sat., Nov. 29, 8:30 p.m., $12, with Diabolic, Reef the Lost Cauze, Writtenhouse, King Magnetic, 941 Theater, 941 N. Front St., myspace.com/immortaltechnique.

HIP-HOP
Redman and Method Man

Right after Redman dived his high ass off the Trocadero stage last November, he told the roaring crowd that he and Method Man were back in the studio prepping a follow-up to their 1999 collaboration, The Blackout. He also said they would come to Philly. Exactly a year later, at least half of that has come true. Guess we have to wait a little bit longer for the album.

Sat., Nov. 29, 9 p.m., $30-$32, with Termanology and Big Pooh, Trocadero, 215-922-5483, thetroc.com.
