Shop, Rock & Roll

Published: Dec 9, 2008

Sat., Dec. 13, 2-6 p.m., $5-$10 (sliding scale admission), Old Pine Community Center, 401 Lombard St., 215-789-4879, girlsrockphilly.org

Girls Rock Philly want to infuse your holiday shopping with a little bit of rock. In partnership with South Philly's craft-space boutique Mew Gallery, Girls Rock Philly have an afternoon of rock 'n' roll 'n' shopping in store for crowds with a knack for crafting and a soft spot for sweets.

GRP's Shop, Rock & Roll showcases the work of local artists and crafters, from affordable art and crocheted trinkets to jewelry and clothing. Native Philadelphians Julia Curcio of Yarn Beast, pop artist Jim Horwat and the innovative Lance Pawling are a few of the many whose kitschy-cool collectables will be on sale. In hopes of spreading the craft bug and fostering a DIY spirit, Shop, Rock & Roll features various crafting stations for participants to create their own stocking stuffers. "Rock 'n' roll is one of the cheapest, most immediate ways to make your own media and get your voice heard in the world," says GRP director Beth Warshaw-Duncan. "You don't have to be perfect, you can be as loud as you want to be, and you can take charge of exactly how you want to sound, look and work towards your goals."

This year's sale will support GRP's summer day camp program. "The Philly music scene eight to 10 years from now will absolutely see a benefit from our current and future campers," says Warshaw-Duncan. "Even right now, our volunteers are meeting each other, playing more, making lots of diverse music and offering a supportive local community for bands that Philadelphia can always work on cultivating." Shop, Rock & Roll is already benefiting: The event features former campers-cum-rockers Iron Tree and DJ Sassafras.

But that's not all, there's also a bake sale cookie swap. So get crafty, shop on and rock out.
