Last time we spoke to Craig Elkins he had just moved to L.A. and gotten access to a top-secret Universal Music Web site that hooks up songwriters with big-name stars. By now the ex-Huffamoose frontman must have a few juicy anecdotes about Christina Aguilera, right? "Christina and I are on the outs. I'm pretty sure she never listened to the song I never wrote for her," he quips. "Seriously though, at some point not too long after my awesome meeting with Universal, I realized that I wasn't the only songwriter privy to the top-secret list." X-Tina's missing out. Elkins, whose scratchy, acrobatic voice made "Wait" a ubiquitous mini-hit in 1997, is writing some of his best stuff right now. You might already know: WXPN's been playing "It's All Good Baby," the new single by Elkins' current project, O.L.D. (which doesn't stand for anything). It's dark, blunt and catchy, and makes you want to hear more. And you can, this Thursday at World Café, when Elkins opens up for himself at the Huffamoose reunion show. That band infamously imploded on tour (and on film, in the doc Here Comes Huffamoose), but the hatchet is long-buried. This one-off nostalgia trip should be fun as hell.
