Neighborhood Bike Works Shape Up the Shop

Team up with the Neighborhood Bike Works crew to do some super-early spring cleaning. With more than a couple of projects open to volunteers, NBW volunteers will spend their day organizing bike shop classrooms at two of their West Philly locations. Volunteers can expect to get their hands dirty stripping bike parts from donated frames and spreading a little paint. Free lunch for volunteers, compliments of REI.

Gaudenzia Centro Primavera Read-a-Thon

Bookworms, gather round: North Philly's Centro Primavera is going literary with a read-a-thon. Open to the public, this year's page-turning event transforms adult volunteers into storytelling orators. Reading nonstop from childhood classics and books about Martin Luther King Jr., expect Gaudenzia Centro's audience to be young, wide-eyed and cute. Outward Bound Fairmount Park Cleanup

Spearheading a three-hour cleanup in partnership with Fairmount Park, Outward Bound alumni join members of Philly Summer Search along with community volunteers to beautify park areas surrounding the Outward Bound Philadelphia Center. Clean-up tools, including gloves and bags, will be provided on location, and the cleanup will be followed by a barbecue.

Unitarian Society of Germantown Bowl-Making

The Unitarian Society of Germantown takes its partnership with Northwest Philly's Interfaith Hospitality Network (NPIHN) to the potter's wheel. Clay enthusiasts of any level will help replenish NPIHN's bowl supply for its forthcoming Empty Bowl Dinner, a soup-savvy fundraiser. Volunteers will carpool to Mount Airy's Allens Lane Art Center, where the bowls will be crafted and fired.

ACORN Fights Foreclosure

The Philadelphia branch of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) is hitting the streets to give local homeowners the know-how to fight and beat foreclosure. Spreading the word door to door, ACORN volunteers will share information about the Philadelphia Diversion Program, explain how homeowners can register and receive free counseling and assistance in order to keep their home sweet homes.
