Sketches of Fishtown Book Release Party | Sat. Jan. 31, 7-11 p.m., $25, Holy Name of Jesus Church Hall, 701 E. Gaul St., e-mail phillytoon@yahoo.com for more information
It's time to get sketchy. Celebrating Philly cartoonist Jeff Kilpatrick's book release, Saturday's bash is all about Fishtown, fun and innovative art. What began in 2004 as a project with his cousin and fellow artist Sean Gallagher, Kilpatrick's book Sketches of Fishtown is an illustrated assortment of the neighborhood's residents, wildlife and landmarks. "This is a natural neighborhood with a good mix of people who are native and new folks that just moved in," says Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick's first volume features more than 50 pen-and-ink scenes inspired by his beloved neighborhood. With the creative collaboration of neighbors and friends, the installment appeared around the time Fishtown started gentrifying. "We wanted to involve our neighbors in the project so we were distributing [the pieces] as fliers at first, almost like street art," Kilpatrick says. "Everybody is always credited if they gave me an idea, photo for reference, or an idea."
This Saturday's release will give party-goers a chance to get their hands on a copy of the book in addition to free beer compliments of PBR, Philadelphia Brewing Co. and Fishtown Beverage. There will also be some quizzo, a raffle, rockin' tunes and tasty eats catered by Liberties Restaurant. Time to show your Fishtown love.
