This week's installment of the West Philly avant-jazz series promises to be one of its best, with three intriguing groups. The New York/Dublin trio White Rocket (pictured) was formed when trumpeter Jacob Wick met Irishmen Greg Felton (piano) and Sean Carpio (drums) at the Banff Centre for Jazz & Creative Music in Canada, a regular retreat which has spawned many collaborations over the years. This trio is particularly promising, its new CD a vivid debut full of dramatic playing and a broad palette of colors belying its sparse instrumentation. Another trumpet-led trio is Improvisers for the Abolition of Wayne Newton, and regardless of their music their cause is undeniably worth supporting. But with veteran horn player Herb Robertson at the helm, the sound should live up to the good intentions. Along with Robertson, best known for his long association with Downtown altoist Tim Berne, are drummer Adrian Valosin and Dave Kaczorowski. The bill is rounded out by New York sextet Pull.
