First impressions of UArts' Art & Design @ 50 Expo/Sale are dizzying. The show is stuffed with more than 200 paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs and ceramics, a reflection of the many types of art taught at the university. Embarking on its 50th year of doling out diplomas, UArts is celebrating with this presentation of art created by faculty, students and alumni. "[It's] a rich mix of works," says UArts' College of Art & Design Dean Stephen Tarantal, of aesthetics ranging from classical and contemporary, to conceptual and illustrative. There are small works, like Gary Caal's intimate 9-by-8-inch painting Three Lemons, and biggies, such as Debora Dias' 6-by-7-foot exotic abstract figural canvas, Collision of a Rooted Earth (pictured). Prices go from safe ($100) to splurge ($15,000), with half of proceeds benefiting the Promising Young Artists Scholarship Fund. And there's something for everyone, says Tarantal. "There are many voices here," he says, "and each one thinks they are the center of the universe. And they are."
Wed., March 18, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (viewing only); Thu., March 19, 8-10 p.m. (public sale); free admission, Dorrance Hamilton Hall, University of the Arts, 320 S. Broad St., 215-717-6145, my.uarts.edu/artsale.
