If you're among the gaggle with googly-eyes for Ida Maria (like me) then you might go for guitar girl Lissy Trullie. She lacks Maria's daring and comes off a little like some kind of hipster legacy in interviews, but Trullie makes a strong case for her existence with her debut EP, Self-Taught Learner. It's a mostly catchy and chorus-driven rock statement, with husky vocals and a couple of smart riffs. In "Boy Boy" she damns some chatch she can't help but admire: "All the notches in your belt make your pants tight." "Forget About It" seems to be the product of a Pitchfork focus group (Franz Ferdinand stomp-beats, plinky Vampire Weekend guitars) but it won me over with its simple heartweary lyrics and angelic la-la-las. Trullie's been known to cover Amy Winehouse, but do us all a favor and don't yell for it at the Khyber on Tuesday. It's 2009.
