You Just Won't Die

Philly Zombie Crawl

Published: Apr 7, 2009

This Easter, the undead rise again. Celebrating Resurrection Sunday with an unconventional, slightly offensive twist, participants in the Philly Zombie Crawl will pay tribute to the world's most famous zombie — Jesus. The event begins at Tattooed Mom, where makeup artists doll out faux rotting flesh and open wounds, ceremonially cut a zombie cake and then shamble off to the next bar.

Spearheaded by local DJ Robert Drake in 2006, the full-out crawl began as just a party. "Philadelphia will always be known as a city of firsts, and the Philly Zombie Crawl is right up there," Drake says. "Although not the first zombie crawl in America, we are the first Zombie Crawl to happen on Easter Sunday." He will lead South Street's thirsty, reanimated patrons from Tattooed Mom to Lickety Split, Copabanana and Manny Brown's, which will serve up zombie-theme drinks and specials. The crawl will culminate in an undead edition of the party "Fast, Cheap and Out of Control" at Fluid Nightclub, complete with a grave-rising dance and costume contest. So raise a glass to the Philly Zombie Crawl — it lives again. Not that it could ever die, anyway.

Sun., April 12, 6 p.m., pay as you go, begins at Tattooed Mom, 530 South St., 215-238-9880, phillyzombiecrawl.com.
