The Style Issue

What is Philadelphia style?

Published: Apr 8, 2009

DUNCAN BLACK: Jacket, Steven Alan ($370) at Sugarcube (124 N. Third St.); vest ($150) and shirt ($89), Heritage Collection at Banana Republic (1401 Walnut St.); jeans, Levi's 501s Super Skinny ($29.99) at Urban Outfitters (1627 Walnut St.); wingtips, Ben Sherman ($79.99) at Urban Outfitters; straw fedora, Christys' London ($55) at Sugarcube.

What is Philadelphia style? There's no overarching fashion presence here, no runways, no spindly editors to tease out trends or make pronouncements. From New York, Alexander Wang was dressing Kate Moss in shredded denim shorts last summer, all unaware that girls from Mayfair to Pennsport never gave them up in the first place. Style here comes from the most organic place — the fertile dirt of a university town with an art scene and an attitude, a city that belongs as much to the people who make it run as the people who run it. In the following pages (and on our cover, above, where blogger Atrios, aka Duncan Black, gets on his soap box), local tastemakers play dolls with a few of our favorite Philadelphians. Their spring looks were sourced from independent designers, corporate churners like our friendly hometown URBN and the pick of the thrifts. This is the land of Birds fans who still proudly wear their Zoobaz, after all.

Jesus H. Christ in a tuxedo, that's startling.

One presumes that, unlike Sarah Palin, Atrios/Duncan didn't try to keep the clothes.

Tom Wolfe is spinning in his grave.

Jesus H. Christ in a tuxedo shirt with ruffles, that's startling.

One presumes that, unlike Sarah Palin, Duncan/Atrios didn't try to keep the clothes afterwards.

I just want to know whose copy of photoshop should be summarily stripped from him or her, because that's some terrible work, right there.

Sorry for the double comment above. It wasn't all that funny the first time, I know. Is Haloscan contagious?
by Sinfonian on April 8th 2009 11:53 PM

now, if he'd only get a high-n-tight crewcut like that good looking blogger the Philly Weekly put on their cover in december...
by brendancalling on April 9th 2009 9:23 AM

I'll be honest. I think he pulls it off.

Hey, Duncan looks OK. Now, if only Howard Hawks was around to make the movie.
by SteinL on April 9th 2009 11:12 AM

I'm gonna come to the defense of our photographer and our design department here and state definitively and for the record that there is no Photoshopping in this image. Dr. Black was on the box, the box was in Rittenhouse Square, and Felicia D'Ambrosio chased those pigeons so they'd fly just so as Michael T. Regan snapped that shot.
by Brian howard on April 9th 2009 12:00 PM

@gwpda

it's not growing. it actually has the 2nd fastest declining population in the U.S.
by iloveny on April 9th 2009 12:44 PM

Was Washington Sq. not Rittenhouse, but there was no photoshopping..
by Atrios on April 9th 2009 1:26 PM

@ atrios thanks for correcting me on the park.
by brian howard on April 9th 2009 3:53 PM

This just occurred to me - was he deliberately styled to look like Harold Hill from The Music Man?
