The mad scene is a dependable staple of the opera composer's bag of tricks, and no one did it better than Donizetti. This masterpiece is a spectacular piece of vocal writing, and a vehicle for some of the most famous coloratura sopranos in history. It is also the dramatic lynchpin in an elegant and powerful theatrical conception, a setting of a novel by Sir Walter Scott. AVA's productions of this opera will include two of their most promising singers, Angela Meade and Michael Fabiano.
