The name explicitly invokes everyone's favorite Saturn-based avant-big band, but Sun Ra's band of space gypsies is far from the only touchstone for Greg Tate's amorphous ensemble. Adopting Butch Morris' "conduction" technique, Tate can wave his baton and conjure sounds from P-Funk to Wu-Tang to Bitches Brew, channeled by a multidirectional group of latter-generation New York downtowners. Making Love to the Dark Ages marks Burnt Sugar's 10th anniversary and its first CD in four years, so expect an especially celebratory blend of the electric and eclectic.
