Co-operation

Thank you for informing the Philadelphia community about the viability of co-ops [Cover Story, "In Bloom," Patrick Rapa, May 7, 2009]. It seems that the history of co-ops was born out of economic necessity and the desires of a group to organize around a common economic theme to enable their community to be sustainable. Whether it was weavers in England, farmers in the Midwest or New England, small hardware store operators wishing to start a co-op to buy together and get better pricing than the big box stores, or electric co-ops to help get electric lines to under-served rural communities, co-ops have continued to play an important role in the economic viability of many different communities.

We see co-ops in Philadelphia as a way to bring back small neighborhood stores of different services (food, hardware, insurance, etc.) that are needed in many areas of the city.

Again, thank you for the coverage and we will be sure to pass this article around to our 3,500 household members.

Taxing

Ugh, this should be so easy [Naked City, "It's Alive," Isaiah Thompson, May 7, 2009]. They could actually try to collect the taxes that are already owed to the city, such as from the Eagles, politicians, businesses, etc.

They should not cut cops or increase the wage tax. Why would you get rid of cops in a city with so much crime? And why would you increase the wage tax since it is a disincentive to working/living in the city? I turned down jobs in the city just because of the wage tax. So not worth it.

The article "It's Alive!" by Isaiah Thompson [Naked City, May 7, 2009] contained an error. The Board of Revision of Taxes is not under investigation by any federal authority. City Paper apologizes for the error.

In last week's food feature on Philly Kitchen Share ["The Perfect Hosts," Lauren F. Friedman, May 7, 2009], Pumpkin chef/owner Ian Moroney's name was misspelled. City Paper apologizes for the error.
