And lo, as James Murphy once prophesied, the kids have sold their turntables and bought guitars. There's a Norman Greenbaum fuzz and soul clap swagger to Free Energy, who are new to both DFA Records and Philadelphia. That '70s rock bent also shows up in the toothy organ bounce on "Dream City," in the ripped guitar solo on "Dark Trance" and in generally exploratory songwriting and craft, an interesting flipside from what is generally thought of as a dance label. Head to the band's coming out party at Saturday's Foggy Notion shindig and welcome them to town.
