Mosaic lures listeners into a false sense of comfort with its opening track, a soothing rendition of Carole King's "So Far Away." But unlike so many of her contemporaries, vocalist Kendra Shank isn't content to simply croon a set of pretty songs, and her fifth CD is as adventurous as most female singers' are banal. Where her last disc took on the individualistic songbook of Abbey Lincoln, here she finds equally rich depths to plumb in material from Irving Berlin to Bill Evans, imbuing each with her own darkly tinged strength.
