Stockholm's Axel Willner mesmerized critics, and a surprising number of crossover listeners, with 2007's From Here We Go Sublime, which felt like a single trancey groove stretched out to infinity, or at least album length. Without straying too far afield, Yesterday and Today — out this week on ANTI-, thereby making Willner a highly improbable labelmate to Case, Cave and Waits — finds the Swede broadening his options to include rubbery basslines, live drums, motorik electro-funk and a tender, surprisingly straight-ahead vocal cover that trumps his typically subtle, subversively sneaky sampling tendencies.
