Call it Indie Rock High School Musical.
John Armstrong, a senior at Friends' Central High, is in the process of restaging Ribbons of War, a musical by South Philly punks the Extraordinaires, as part of a graduation project.
"They tell you to do something you'll never get to a chance to do," says Armstrong. The 18-year-old doesn't have a life plan, so why not stage a rock 'n' roll musical?
Ribbons centers around a femme fighter pilot who falls for a clipper ship captain. They traverse the oceans together but she's meant for the air, while he's bound to the sea. "It's like Green Acres," says Extraordinaires singer/guitarist Jay Purdy.
Purdy and the band are pumped to get to see their magnum opus in motion. They'll return from a European tour just in time to attend. "We have the idea of getting a limousine and getting our own red carpet," says Purdy. "We'll try to clean up a bit and be the distinguished creators."
