On their new song "Slap Dash for No Cash," Art Brut take dead aim on the rich bands with their expertly buffed and polished discographies. "Why is everyone trying to sound like U2?/ It's not a very cool thing to do." Instead, declaiming frontman Eddie Argos (who blessedly will probably never be the band's "singer") celebrates the bum notes, amateurish production and happy accidents of his favorite über-indie 7-inches. The perhaps unintentional irony is that Art Brut grew out of Argos' cherished sound an album ago. True, no one will ever mistake Art Brut vs. Satan (Downtown) for No Line on the Horizon. But Frank Black's production is neither fuss nor muss, presenting the band's lean, expert performances cleanly and conservatively. With Argos enthusiastically leading the way on topics like "DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshakes" and "Summer Job," however, it's safe to say Art Brut will thankfully never fully grow up.
