Hail it as an artistic renaissance or lament another step in the inexorable march toward gentrification —buy hey, why not enjoy it? The generally disregarded northwesterly 'hood of Brewerytown has been witnessing an upspike in cultural action lately, and it's throwing a little coming-out party this weekend to let us in on the fun. A full-on collaborative effort, the Art + Soul Food fest will feature work ranging from Beth Beverly's whimsical-grotesque fantasy taxidermy (Ring Them Bells is pictured) to a Megawords light and sound installation, displayed in several vacant storefronts (and one established arts space, Studio 27.28) along West Girard; musical entertainment from to gospel to experimental ambient; and — the best part — free samples from lauded local soul food joints Butter's and Deborah's Kitchen, along with Rita's, whipping up a special sweet-potato water ice for the occasion.
Opening festival Sat., June 13, 6-9 p.m., free, galleries open Saturdays through July 4, West Girard Avenue between 26th and 30th streets, 215-908-1881, artplussoulfood.com.
