Ranging from drawings to hand-sewn fabrics, Midwives Collective's "Merge" brings together the divergent paths of seven of its eight artist members. Curator Elizabeth J. Smith overlays hand-stitched and -dyed silks atop images of cells and tissues, the diaphanous silk providing a window to her personal evolution, while Erin Filson's series of Rorschach-esque seeped ink drawings became therapeutic for her preshow anxieties. "She's going outside of her safety zone," says Smith of Filson's unusual work. "It's very brave of her — bravery, of course, being something necessary of every artist."
