After 17 years with the Pennsylvania Ballet, Meredith Rainey is shaking things up. "Ballet is very linear," says Rainey, who collaborated with former Headlong director Anna Drozdowski and Subcircle co-director Jorge Cousineau on his newest piece. "This process taught me to work differently, to put together pieces like a puzzle and play around." Rainey has not abandoned "ballet-like" movement completely, but Look Inside — an exploration of voyeurism and perception — was heavily shaped by Drozdowski and Cousineau, who encouraged a more generative approach to choreography. "The movement is intention-driven," Rainey says. "It's not just dancing for dancing's sake."
