The Maury Show isn't just for laughs — it inspires art, as well. Local artist Abby Schmidt used video stills from an episode on overweight children and their parents to create Hand (pictured) and Fork, vibrant melted wax pieces that show obese kids stuffing their faces. Applying the malleable substance to backlit panels and framed plywood, Schmidt, 29, explores heavy topics like politics, consumerism and their effects on children worldwide. "One thing that strikes me," says Area 919 owner Michael Garden, "is that she's young but her work is very advanced and very sophisticated."
