In America, chances are you see far more cars — in movies, TV, magazines and life in general — than bikes. So, in an effort to give the two-wheeled machine its long-overdue time to shine, the Moore College of Art & Design is hosting a slew of bike exhibits and events.

The core exhibit features vintage, folding and hand-built bikes; photographs and videos of the Philadelphia International Cycling Champion Race and Neighborhood Bike Works; and the unveiling of the bicycle prototype for Bike Share Philadelphia. Other related exhibits showcase work from local artists, like the lighthearted tricycles made out of toilets by brothers Steven and Bill Blaise Dufala.

The event's opening reception is more than the usual wine-and-cheese gathering — BMX pro John "Dizz" Hicks, along with Philly BMXers, will ride on ramps that are a part of Ryan Humphrey's installation "Fast Forward." Also, as part of the Bicycle Film Festival, there'll be an 8 p.m. screening of Joe Stakun's I Love My Bicycle: The Story of FBM Bikes, which chronicles a DIY bike company's rise to fame.

All this differs greatly from Moore's usual focus — fine art exhibits — but chief curator Lorie Mertes claims it wasn't any harder to organize. "I was astounded by how much the creative community is a core part of the biking community," she says. "The bicycle is a canvas."
