At 80, drummer Edgar Bateman has all the makings of a local legend except for the requisite accolades. Carrying on the legacy of forebears like Max Roach and Art Blakey, Bateman brings a hard-bop intensity and a willingness and ability to go as far afield as his bandmates care to venture. That's led to alchemical results in recent work with Bobby Zankel as well as his past work with greats like Walt Dickerson, John Handy and Eric Dolphy. As part of Moonstone's monthly Lucky Old Souls series, he'll team with alto saxophonist Julian Pressley, who got his start with Bateman and has gone on to work with Odean Pope, Charles Fambrough and the Sonic Liberation Front.
