What's so surprising about Deborah Zoe Laufer's End Days isn't its naughty satire — taking aim at Rapture-ready Sylvia (Susan McKey), who hangs with Jesus (droll Ross Beschler); geeky Elvis impersonator Nelson's (Aubie Merrylees) relentless pursuit of Sylvia's Goth daughter, Rachel (Claire Inie-Richards); and near-catatonic Arthur (David Ingram), whose lethargy has shocking roots — but how director Jackson Gay's impeccable production morphs humor into heartfelt hope for a dysfunctional family discovering its unique path to repentance and salvation. Oh, and don't forget Stephen Hawking (Beschler again), sharing his cosmic viewpoint — and a doobie — with Rachel.
