Chef Michael Schulson, whose restaurant Izakaya has been a hit at the Borgata at A.C., is returning to Philly (he previously was at Pod) with Sampan, a moderately priced 70-seat space that'll explore flavors from China, Japan and Southeast Asia. Schulson, who originally has plans to open a larger, pricier concept in the city before the economy got really shifty, says he plans on creating unexpected takes on classics like spring rolls and pad Thai, steamed pork belly buns, raw fish and the like, to go along with moderately priced wine and sake programs (lots of by-the-glass options for both). Look for a November opening. In the meantime, check out Schulson hosting/judging the new TLC baking competition show Ultimate Cake-Off, which debuts Aug. 3. More on Meal Ticket.

LITTLE VITTLES

>> VA-based Elevation Burger, which just opened a Wynnewood location (50 E. Wynnewood Road, 610-645-7704), plans on opening nine more restaurants in the region in the next four years.

>> Two new happy hours of note — Bar 210 at Lacroix (Rittenhouse Hotel, 210 W. Rittenhouse Square) is offering $6 cocktails, $5 wines, $4 beers and comp apps from 5 to 7 weekdays; and Doobies (2201 Lombard St., 215-546-0316) vows to reapply its usual 5-to-7 happy-hour pricing between the hours of 7 and midnight Sunday through Thursday if it starts raining outside.
