Memphis Taproom is usually busy serving up craft beers and tasty atypical pub grub. This weekend, though, it'll likely attract visitors in search of handcrafted goods of a different sort — the corner bar is hosting its first-ever Handmade Market, where more than 50 local artists will hawk their wares.
"There are only so many beer events you can do in a month," says organizer Leigh Maida. And while beer may be the Fishtown tavern's specialty, this bar's no stranger to the arts scene: Its walls are lined with works by staff members and local artists, some of whom are participating in this weekend's market. Among those are Noel Hefele, who paints scenes of Northeast Philly (pictured), and Ed Snyder, whose macabre photographs nearly bring life to the cemetery statues he shoots. Some of the bar's staffers will be there, too, like Aimee Enright, who creates fused-glass mezuzots, and Julianna Lose, whose screen-printed works include an"Ode to Scrapple" accordion book.
With any luck, the Handmade Market will be a recurring event, but Maida says she'll likely prepare better next time. "I started out telling everyone, 'Oh, it's casual — just come, and put your stuff wherever,'" she says. "It seems kind of irresponsible of me to invite 50 people to my backyard and not have a plan of some kind."
